There were some positive and negative effects the English explorers and the Indians had on each other.

John Rolfe was captured by the Indians. He was given a large feast. He was supposed to be executed but the dearest daughter of the Indians Chief Powhatan, Pocahontas, saved him. Then later Pocahontas was kidnapped and brought to Jamestown to be traded for English prisoners and weapons Powhatan had. The exchange never took place. Pocahontas then learned English, converted to Christianity, and was baptized. This was when she came to the attention of John Rolfe. John Rolfe agonized over weeks over the decision to marry a "heathen". He made a long letter to Governor Dale for permission to marry Pocahontas. He aloud him to marry Pocahontas. The wedding took place in the spring of 1614. There marriage resulted in a long peace with the Indians, long enough for the sttlers to expand and develop their colony and plant themselves permanently onto the new land.
